For too long the "trolls" under the bridge have dominated the politics in this great state. The government of this State of Michigan in no way reflects the values of this our great state of SUPERIORLAND! Yes, citizens I am renewing the call for secession from this state of Michigan. As citizens of Superiorland we understand that the Upper peninsula has a unique cultural heritage that is separate and distinct from those people that live under the bridge.

Proposed Capitol
A reader ask's "What city should be the Capital of Superiorland?" Local lore states that before Michigan became a state, Calumet was in the running next to Lansing. In addition to having the distinction of almost having been the seat of government (and therefore beginning the tyranny by which the Upper is ruled by the lower peninsula having no thought as to the well-being of the former), it is also home to the Michigan's oldest concrete. Other suggestions will be considered and, ultimately, citizens of Superiorland will hold a referendum on the matter, once statehood is acheived.

The blog is an unexpected, jewel of a find. The blog brings back memories of similar discussions from my college years. I'm sending the link to all of my friends. Nice work!

The capital of any state formed from the UP should be MARQUETTE. It has the largest population of any town in the Yoop and is arguably more well known than any other Yooper town.

If the UP secedes from Michigan, it can repeal intolerant and counterproductive "laws" that restrict personal freedom. For example, the new state could stop prosecuting adults who grow or use marijuana on their own property and focus instead on REAL criminals (people who kill, rape, rob, molest children, etc.). The new state could also respect the right of law-abiding adults to own firearms for self-defense, and carry them concealed, without undue restrictions like the ones imposed by Lansing. The new state could also become a shopping destination for residents of neighboring states/provinces by having NO SALES TAX -- thereby helping Yoopers start or grow small retail businesses & create jobs.

It should either be Marquette or Escanaba. Marquette is more or less the center of all commerce in the UP and Escanaba is just on here because it's better than Sault.

or, possibly, the up could have separate capitals for each branch of gov't: Marquette for executive (governor), Escanaba for legislative, and Sault for the judicial (courts). That would be Awesome!

You all have forgotten about the great metropolis of Randville. This grand city is located 15 miles north of Iron Mountain somewhat centralized and they have already coined the phrase "Capitol of the U.P"

Escanaba is a logical choice since it already has an overabundance of attorneys looking for something to do to keep busy. This would be the answer to their prayers. Randville isn't a bad idea either since it has a very interesting state museum (the bar on m95) with a lot of stuffed local fauna and a pretty decent pool table. But I really think the answer is Foster City which at one time, I'm told had a population of aroung 50,000 (not including the wolves, bear and deer) and is located on a major highway (m69).

Marquette should most definitely NOT be the capitol. It should be last on the list. Every state in the US has its capitol somewhere other than their biggest city. Too busy. The capitol should be centrally located, provide nearby transportation access (decent roads, rail, airport), and be in a spot away from major distractions; commerce, traffic, etc. Gwinn is a great candidate. And no I'm not from Gwinn.

Anyway, the decision on where to put the capitol doesn't matter. Crystal Falls will just steal it.
